Pindalaühikud are units used to measure the size of a two-dimensional surface. They quantify how much space an object occupies on a flat plane. The most common system for surface area units is the metric system, which is based on the meter. The base unit in the metric system is the square meter (m²), which represents the area of a square with sides measuring one meter each. Larger and smaller units are derived by powers of ten. For instance, a square kilometer (km²) is equal to one million square meters and is used for measuring large areas like countries or continents. Conversely, a square centimeter (cm²) is one ten-thousandth of a square meter and is suitable for measuring smaller surfaces like the area of a page in a book. Other metric units include the square millimeter (mm²) for very small areas and the hectare (ha), which is equal to 10,000 square meters and is often used in agriculture and land measurement.

In the imperial and US customary systems, common units of area include the square foot (ft²), square yard (yd²), and square mile (mi²). A square foot is the area of a square with sides of one foot. A square yard is equivalent to nine square feet, and a square mile is a much larger unit, encompassing 640 acres or approximately 2.59 square kilometers. These units are still in use in some countries, particularly for land measurement and construction. Regardless of the system used, all surface area units are essentially derived from linear measurements, squared to represent two dimensions. The choice of unit typically depends on the scale of the area being measured to ensure practicality and clarity in communication.
