Pigmentfordeling refers to how pigments are distributed within a material, tissue, or organism. It describes the spatial arrangement and uniformity of pigment particles and can influence color, appearance, and function.

In biology, pigmentfordeling affects coloration and physiology. In animals, melanin distribution in skin, hair, and eyes determines color and can influence camouflage and UV protection. Melanin production and deposition are controlled by genetics, hormones, and environmental exposure. In plants and algae, chlorophyll distribution within chloroplasts, as well as the presence of carotenoids and anthocyanins, shapes leaf color and photosynthetic efficiency. Seasonal changes can alter pigment composition, revealing underlying pigments as chlorophyll breaks down.

In medicine and pathology, pigmentfordeling is used to diagnose and study conditions. Abnormal pigment deposition—such as hemosiderin, lipofuscin, or excessive melanin—can indicate disease, aging, or tissue damage. Histological staining and imaging help visualize pigment patterns and quantify their distribution.

In materials science and art conservation, pigmentfordeling influences the quality of paints, inks, and coatings. Uniform dispersion yields consistent color and stability, while aggregation or phase separation causes streaks and inhomogeneity. Factors such as particle size, binder, solvent, and mixing technique affect dispersion. Analytical methods like microscopy, spectrophotometry, chromatography, and digital image analysis are used to assess pigment distribution.
