Pielisjoki

Pielisjoki is a river in Eastern Finland, flowing through the municipalities of Lieksa and Joensuu in the North Karelia region. It is the second-largest river in Finland by drainage basin area. The river originates from Lake Pielinen, Finland's fourth-largest lake, and flows approximately 69 kilometers before emptying into Lake Pyhäselkä, which is part of the Saimaa lake complex.

The Pielisjoki is a vital waterway for the region, historically important for timber transport and now also for tourism. Its course is marked by several rapids, though many have been regulated for hydropower production and navigation. The most notable rapids include the Pankakoski rapids and the Joensuu rapids, which have been harnessed for electricity generation. The river's flow is regulated by dams to manage water levels and power output.

Along its banks, the Pielisjoki passes through varied landscapes, from forested wilderness to the urban areas of Lieksa and Joensuu. The city of Joensuu, the provincial capital, is situated at the river's mouth, and the river plays a significant role in the city's identity and recreational activities. Fishing is a popular pastime on the Pielisjoki, with species such as pike, perch, and zander found in its waters. The river is also a popular route for canoeing and kayaking.
