Phosphaterecovery refers to processes that reclaim phosphorus from waste streams—such as municipal wastewater, agricultural runoff, manure, and food industry effluents—for reuse as fertilizer or as a raw material in industrial processes. The approach is motivated by the finite nature of phosphate rock, rising demand for sustainable nutrients, and the need to prevent eutrophication of water bodies.

Common sources of recoverable phosphorus include municipal wastewater treatment plant streams, anaerobic digester effluents, and process streams from food and agricultural industries. Recovered phosphorus can take the form of marketable products such as struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate), calcium phosphate, or hydroxyapatite, depending on the chemistry of the process and the reagents used.

Technologies for phosphaterecovery fall into several categories. Chemical precipitation captures phosphate as solid minerals, notably struvite, by adding magnesium or other reagents and controlling pH. Biological phosphorus removal uses specific microbial communities to accumulate phosphorus, which can then be recovered from sludge or through side-stream treatments. Adsorption and ion exchange employ materials like iron or aluminum oxides, activated carbon, or specialized resins to capture phosphate and later release and reuse it. Crystallization and filtration steps are often used to produce pelletized or granulated phosphorus products suitable for fertilizers.

Economic and regulatory factors influence adoption, including the cost of reagents, energy use, product purity, and policies promoting nutrient recycling. Phosphaterecovery supports circular economy goals by transforming waste phosphorus into valuable resources while mitigating environmental impacts.
