Perusjäännös
Perusjäännös, meaning "base residue" in Finnish, refers to the remaining portion of a substance after a basic extraction or separation process. In chemistry, it often describes the material left behind after an acid-base extraction. For instance, if an organic compound is dissolved in an organic solvent and washed with an aqueous base, acidic impurities will react with the base and move into the aqueous layer, while the desired neutral or basic organic compound, and thus the perusjäännös, will remain in the organic solvent. Conversely, if a basic compound is extracted into an acidic aqueous solution, the perusjäännös would be the remaining organic material that did not react with the acid.
The concept of perusjäännös is also relevant in analytical chemistry and various industrial processes. For example,
