The primary goal is to ensure that the deceased's estate is properly managed, debts are settled, and the remaining assets are transferred to the rightful beneficiaries.

The initial stage typically involves identifying the deceased's assets, which can include real estate, bank accounts, investments, personal belongings, and any other property owned. Simultaneously, any outstanding debts, taxes, and funeral expenses must be identified and accounted for. A crucial step is often determining whether the deceased left a will. If a will exists, it dictates how the estate should be distributed, provided it is legally valid. If there is no will, the distribution follows statutory rules of intestacy, which designate heirs based on family relationships.

In many legal systems, a formal probate process is required, particularly if there is a will or significant assets.
