Pereiaslavets

Pereiaslavets is a historical settlement located in modern-day Bulgaria, near the city of Preslav. It rose to prominence in the 10th century during the First Bulgarian Empire. Its strategic location along the trade routes connecting the interior of the empire with the Danube River made it an important commercial and military center.

The settlement is particularly known for its role in the Byzantine–Bulgarian wars. In 971, Emperor John I Tzimiskes of the Byzantine Empire captured Pereiaslavets during his campaign against Bulgaria. The Byzantine chronicler Leo the Deacon described the city as wealthy and well-fortified, and its fall was a significant blow to the Bulgarian state. Archaeological evidence suggests that Pereiaslavets was a thriving urban center with a basilica, fortifications, and evidence of skilled craftsmanship.

After the Byzantine conquest, Pereiaslavets' importance gradually declined. It remained inhabited for some time, but eventually, the focus shifted to other centers, including nearby Preslav. Today, the site is an archaeological area, offering insights into the urban life and historical significance of the First Bulgarian Empire. Excavations have uncovered remains of churches, houses, and defensive structures, contributing to our understanding of medieval Balkan history.
