Perceptpitch

Perceptpitch refers to the perceived fundamental frequency of a sound. While the physical stimulus is a complex sound wave containing numerous harmonics, the brain's auditory system interprets this pattern and identifies a single pitch. This perceived pitch is usually, but not always, the frequency of the lowest harmonic present, known as the fundamental frequency.

Several factors influence perceptpitch. The presence and relative intensity of the harmonics play a significant role. If the fundamental frequency is absent or very weak, the brain can still infer it based on the harmonic relationships, a phenomenon known as the missing fundamental. The temporal pattern of the sound, including its periodicity, also contributes. The duration and timbre of the sound can also subtly affect how pitch is perceived.
