Pelvicus nerves, also known as pelvic splanchnic nerves, are a group of nerves that arise from the sympathetic nervous system and play a significant role in the innervation of the pelvic organs. They originate from the lumbar sympathetic chain in the lower back and travel downward through the pelvis, where they synapse with the parasympathetic nerves.

The pelvicus nerves are responsible for inhibiting the contraction of smooth muscle in the pelvic organs, such as the uterus, bladder, and rectum. This enables the autonomic nervous system to control the relaxation of these muscles, facilitating functions such as urination, defecation, and menstruation. The nerves also contribute to the maintenance of blood flow in the pelvic region.

There are three pairs of pelvicus nerves, known as L6-S2, which arise from different levels of the lumbar spinal cord. The nerves carry preganglionic fibers that synapse with postganglionic neurons in the pelvic ganglia. The postganglionic fibers then travel to their final destinations, where they modulate the activity of smooth muscle in the pelvic organs.

Damage to the pelvicus nerves can result in conditions such as constipation, urinary incontinence, and impaired sexual function. Pelvic surgery or injury to the pelvic region can also compromise the integrity of the pelvicus nerves, leading to long-term dysfunction.

The pelvicus nerves remain a significant area of study in the fields of urology, gynecology, and general surgery.
