PelogStimmungen

PelogStimmungen is a term used to describe the characteristic tuning or scale system found in the Indonesian gamelan music, particularly the pelog scale. Gamelan music is an ensemble of traditional Javanese and Balinese percussion instruments, including metallophones, gongs, and drums. The pelog scale is a seven-note heptatonic scale that is not based on the Western diatonic scale. It typically consists of intervals that can sound dissonant to Western ears but are integral to the aesthetic of gamelan music.

The pelog scale is one of the two principal tuning systems used in gamelan, the other being slendro. Unlike slendro, which is a pentatonic (five-note) scale with roughly equidistant intervals, pelog has seven distinct pitches per octave. However, not all seven pitches are always used in a single piece. The specific intervals within the pelog scale vary from one gamelan set to another, meaning that each instrument set has its own unique tuning. This makes transposition in the Western sense difficult, as a pelog piece played on one set of instruments will not sound identical on another.
