Parlers

Parlers may refer to the social network Parler and, informally, to its users or content. The word is sometimes used in English media as a plural noun to describe posts or profiles on Parler, though this usage is not standardized. In general, Parler itself is the proper name of the platform.

Parler is a social networking service launched in 2018 by John Matze and Jared Thomson. It positions itself as a platform for free expression with lighter moderation than many mainstream networks. Users can create profiles, post messages or media, follow other users, and engage with content via replies, reposts, and likes. The service has been used by a range of political and public-interest figures, as well as by communities seeking fewer content restrictions. Critics have pointed to concerns about disinformation, harassment, and extremist content on the platform.

In January 2021, Parler faced significant controversy after the U.S. Capitol riot and was removed from major app stores and from Amazon Web Services due to policy violations and safety concerns. Parler subsequently relocated to alternative hosting and implemented updated moderation and safety measures. It has since continued in operation with ongoing discussions about platform governance, moderation policies, and the balance between free expression and safety.
