Parlamentarische

Parlamentarische is the attributive form of the German adjective parlamentarisch, meaning “parliamentary.” It is used to describe things related to a parliament, especially in political and institutional contexts.

In German political science, the term appears in several common compound phrases. Parlamentarische Demokratie refers to a system in which the government is elected by the parliament and depends on its confidence. Parlamentarische Republik denotes a republic where the executive government is drawn from the legislature and remains in office only with parliamentary support. Parlamentarische Monarchie describes a constitutional monarchy in which the monarch’s powers are largely ceremonial and the government is formed and overseen by the parliament.

Parlamentarische systems are typically contrasted with prezidentielle or präsidiale structures, in which the executive is elected independently of the legislature and operates with a degree of separation from it. In a parliamentary arrangement, the prime minister or equivalent head of government is usually the leader of the party or coalition with a majority in parliament, and the cabinet is accountable to the legislature.

Grammatically, parlamentarisсh declines like a standard German adjective. The form parlementarische is used before feminine singular nouns or before plural nouns (e.g., parlamentarische Demokratie, parlementarische Systeme). For masculine or neuter singular nominative, the forms would be parlementarischer or parlementarisches, respectively. The base form parlamentarisch is also used as an adverb or in uninflected positions.
