Paradigmatiek

Paradigmatiek is a term used in linguistics and semiotics to refer to the study of paradigmatic relations—the set of linguistic elements that can substitute for one another in a given context. It is contrasted with syntagmatic relations, which describe how units combine in linear sequences. Paradigmatic relations represent the vertical, choice-based dimension of sign systems, where the selection of one element excludes others from the same set.

Origin and scope: The term combines paradigm (paradigma) with the Dutch suffix -iek, indicating a field of study. The concept derives from structural linguistics, notably the work of Ferdinand de Saussure, who distinguished paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes as fundamental to how language units are organized and interpreted. In practice, paradigmatiek guides analyses of morphology, lexicon, and word formation, focusing on how different forms or words can replace each other without altering the underlying structure.

Applications: In morphology and lexicon, paradigms group related forms of a word or words of the same category. For example, the Dutch verb lopen shows a paradigm of person and number: ik loop, jij loopt, hij loopt, wij lopen, jullie lopen, zij lopen. A noun frame such as de [N] zit op de mat allows substitution of [N] with cat, dog, vis, etc., illustrating a paradigmatic set of possible fills. In semiotics, paradigmatiek also addresses how signs can be substituted within a sign system to shift meaning.

Relation to broader theory: Paradigmatic analysis complements syntagmatic analysis and is central to discussions of word classes, inflectional paradigms, and the organization of the mental lexicon. It remains a foundational concept in many languages and in cross-linguistic descriptive linguistics.
