Papyrologie

Papyrology is the academic discipline devoted to the study of ancient papyri. These are documents written on papyrus, a material made from the pith of the papyrus plant, which was widely used in ancient Egypt and other parts of the Mediterranean world for writing. Papyrologists examine these ancient texts to understand various aspects of history, literature, religion, and everyday life in the ancient world.

The study involves not only reading and translating the papyri but also their physical preservation and reconstruction. Many papyri are found in fragments, often in a fragile state due to age and environmental conditions. Specialized techniques are employed to clean, stabilize, and piece together these fragments.
