PanLatinism

PanLatinism is a cultural and political movement that advocates for the unity of peoples of Latin descent. It draws upon a shared heritage rooted in Latin languages (primarily Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian), Roman culture, and historical connections stemming from the Roman Empire. The movement emphasizes the commonalities and shared values among these diverse populations, often promoting cooperation and mutual understanding.

The idea of Latin unity emerged in the 19th century, partly as a reaction to perceived external cultural and political influences, particularly from Germanic and Anglo-Saxon cultures. Early proponents envisioned a united "Latin" front in Europe and later extended this concept to encompass the Americas. While PanLatinism has never achieved the same level of widespread political success as Pan-Slavism or Pan-Germanism, it has manifested in various cultural exchanges, literary movements, and occasional political discussions regarding shared interests among Latin nations. The concept often highlights a romanticized vision of shared history and a perceived common destiny. Critics sometimes point to the diversity within Latin cultures and historical rivalries as barriers to such unity, and the term can also be used in a more controversial context to imply cultural or racial superiority.
