Paljastusaine

Paljastusaine is a Finnish term that translates to "revealing substance" or "developer" in English. It refers to a chemical substance used in photographic or printing processes to convert a latent image into a visible one. In traditional photography, this substance is typically a reducing agent that selectively darkens the silver halide crystals that have been exposed to light. Without a developer, the image formed on the film or photographic paper would remain invisible.

The specific composition of a paljastusaine can vary depending on the type of photographic material and the desired outcome. Common developers contain developing agents, an accelerator to control the pH, a preservative to prevent oxidation, and a restrainer to prevent excessive fogging. For example, in black and white photography, agents like hydroquinone or metol are often used.
