Pakoputkijärjestelmä, commonly known in English as the exhaust system, is a crucial component of internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to safely channel exhaust gases away from the engine's cylinders and out into the atmosphere. This system is not merely a simple pipe; it's a complex assembly designed to reduce noise, control emissions, and improve engine performance.

The journey of exhaust gases begins in the engine cylinders, where they are expelled after combustion. These gases then enter the exhaust manifold, which collects them from each cylinder and directs them into the rest of the system. From the manifold, the gases flow through the exhaust pipe. Along this path, several other components play vital roles. The catalytic converter is a key part, responsible for converting harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and unburned hydrocarbons into less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor through chemical reactions. Further along, the muffler is designed to significantly reduce the noise generated by the rapid expulsion of exhaust gases. It typically achieves this through a series of chambers and baffles that absorb and dissipate sound waves. Finally, the tailpipe directs the treated exhaust gases out of the vehicle.
