Painolastisäiliöihin, often translated as ballast tanks, are a critical component of many vessels, particularly ships and submarines. Their primary function is to control buoyancy and trim. By selectively filling or emptying these tanks with water or air, operators can adjust the vessel's overall weight and density. This allows for precise control over whether the vessel floats higher or lower in the water, a process known as ballasting and de-ballasting.

In merchant ships, ballast tanks are essential for maintaining stability when the vessel is not fully loaded. They can be filled with seawater to compensate for the loss of weight as cargo is discharged, ensuring the ship remains upright and safe. They also help to adjust the ship's trim, which is the difference between the draft at the bow and the stern, for optimal performance and reduced fuel consumption.

For submarines, ballast tanks are fundamental to their operation. By flooding ballast tanks with water, submarines increase their density and submerge. To surface, compressed air is used to expel the water from the tanks, reducing the submarine's density and allowing it to rise. Submarines have sophisticated systems to manage multiple ballast tanks for controlled diving, surfacing, and maintaining neutral buoyancy at desired depths.

The design and management of ballast tanks are subject to strict regulations to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species. Water taken into ballast tanks in one region and discharged in another can carry organisms that can harm local ecosystems. Therefore, various international and national regulations are in place to manage ballast water exchange and treatment.
