There are various forms of PSK, including Binary PSK (BPSK), Quadrature PSK (QPSK), and M-ary PSK. BPSK is the simplest form, using two phases (typically 0 and 180 degrees) to represent a binary 0 or 1. QPSK uses four phases, allowing for the transmission of two bits per symbol. M-ary PSK extends this concept to use M distinct phases to represent log2(M) bits per symbol.

The implementation of PSK systems involves a modulator that shifts the phase of the carrier wave according to the input data stream and a demodulator at the receiver that detects these phase shifts to recover the original data. PSK is widely used in various communication systems due to its relative robustness against noise and interference. Applications include wireless networking, satellite communications, and digital television broadcasting. The efficiency and performance of PSK systems are dependent on factors such as the number of phases used, the signal-to-noise ratio, and the characteristics of the transmission channel.
