The PDC is a multi-enzyme complex that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA, a key step in aerobic respiration that links glycolysis to the citric acid cycle.

PDHfosfataasi acts by dephosphorylating a specific serine residue on the E1 subunit of the PDC. Phosphorylation of this residue by pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) inactivates the PDC. Therefore, PDHfosfataasi reverses this inactivation, thereby increasing the rate of acetyl-CoA production.
