Phosphorus oxychloride, also known as phosphoryl chloride, has the chemical formula PCl3O. It is a colorless, fuming liquid with a pungent odor. PCl3O is a highly reactive compound and is considered an important intermediate in the synthesis of various phosphorus-containing compounds. It is primarily used in the production of phosphate esters, which find applications as plasticizers, flame retardants, and hydraulic fluids.

The compound can be synthesized through several methods, including the oxidation of phosphorus trichloride with oxygen or the reaction of phosphorus pentachloride with phosphorus pentoxide. Due to its reactivity, PCl3O must be handled with care in a well-ventilated area, avoiding contact with water, as it reacts vigorously with moisture to produce phosphoric acid and hydrogen chloride gas. Its corrosive nature necessitates the use of appropriate personal protective equipment when working with it. In organic synthesis, it serves as a dehydrating agent and a chlorinating agent.
