Päästölähde, which translates to "emission source" in English, refers to any point or activity that releases substances or energy into the environment. These emissions can take various forms, including gases, liquids, solid particles, heat, or noise. Understanding emission sources is crucial for environmental protection, pollution control, and climate change mitigation efforts.

Emission sources can be broadly categorized into two main groups: natural and anthropogenic. Natural emission sources include phenomena such as volcanic eruptions releasing ash and gases, forest fires emitting smoke and carbon dioxide, and decaying organic matter producing methane. While these are natural processes, human activities can sometimes exacerbate their frequency or intensity.

Anthropogenic emission sources are those resulting from human activities. These are often the primary focus of environmental regulations and research. Industrial processes, such as manufacturing plants and power generation facilities, are significant sources of air pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. Transportation, including cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships, contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Agriculture is another major anthropogenic source, releasing ammonia, methane from livestock, and nitrous oxide from fertilizer use. Residential activities, like heating and waste disposal, also contribute to emissions.

Identifying and quantifying emissions from these various sources is a fundamental step in developing effective strategies to reduce their environmental impact. This involves monitoring, reporting, and implementing technologies and policies aimed at minimizing the release of harmful substances and energy into the atmosphere, water bodies, and land.
