Osoitekäyttötilat, or address usage modes, refers to the different ways an IP address can be configured and utilized within a network. Primarily, this concept distinguishes between public and private IP addresses. Public IP addresses are globally unique and assigned by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to devices that need direct access to the internet. These addresses are routable across the internet.

In contrast, private IP addresses are reserved for use within local networks, such as home or office networks. These addresses are not routable on the internet and are typically assigned by a router using protocols like DHCP. Common private IP address ranges include 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16. Network Address Translation (NAT) is a technique that allows multiple devices with private IP addresses to share a single public IP address, enabling them to access the internet.
