Osmólos

Osmólos is a term found in some scientific texts referring to a unit of osmotic quantity, similar to the modern osmole. The word appears mainly in older literature or in non-English translations, and it is not standardized in contemporary English scientific usage.

Etymology: The form derives from the same Greek root osmo- that underlies osmolar concepts, with the suffix -los reflecting a unit-like naming pattern found in some languages. In practice, the term has been used inconsistently across sources.

Definition and usage: In sources where it is used, an osmólos is described as the amount of solute that contributes to osmotic pressure as one mole of osmotically active particles in a given solution temperature. As a result, 1 osmólos per liter is equivalent to 1 osmolar, and 1 osmólos per kilogram is equivalent to 1 osmolality. However, due to lack of standardization, many texts avoid the term, preferring osmole, osmolarity, and osmolality to express the same ideas.

Relation to osmotic concepts: The osmotic pressure of a solution depends on the number of osmotically active particles, a relation described by van't Hoff's law for dilute solutions. Osmólos, when encountered, is typically part of historical discussions or cross-language references rather than current practice.
