Orsha

Orsha is a city in the Vitebsk Region of Belarus and the administrative center of Orsha District. It is located in the northeastern part of the country on the right bank of the Western Dvina River, near the confluence with the Orshitsa River. The city sits at a historic transport corridor and serves as a regional economic and cultural center.

The area has medieval origins, and Orsha is mentioned in historical records dating to the Middle Ages. It belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and became part of the Russian Empire after the partitions. Orsha developed as a market town and industrial center in the 19th and early 20th centuries, aided by the arrival of rail connections. It sustained damage during World War II and was rebuilt in the postwar period.

As of the latest estimates, Orsha has a population in the tens of thousands. It remains the administrative center of Orsha District and is a focal point for local administration, education, and culture within the region.
