Orimattila

Orimattila is a town and municipality in Finland, located in the Päijänne Tavastia region. It is situated about 100 kilometers northeast of Helsinki and 30 kilometers south of Lahti. The municipality covers an area of 814.95 square kilometers, of which 54.05 square kilometers is water. As of the end of 2023, Orimattila had a population of approximately 15,500 residents.

The name Orimattila is believed to derive from the Finnish word "orhi," meaning stallion, and "matala," meaning shallow. Historically, the area was known for its horse breeding and shallow river crossings. The town's development began in the 19th century, and it gained its municipal status in 1866. Orimattila's economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and forestry, with a growing presence of small and medium-sized enterprises in recent decades.

Orimattila is characterized by its rural landscapes, forests, and lakes. The municipality is bisected by the Salpausselkä ridge, a significant geological formation.
