OpenDocumentin

OpenDocumentin is a proposed open document format intended as an extension or successor to the OpenDocument Format (ODF). It aims to standardize how text, spreadsheets, and presentations are stored in a portable, machine-readable form to improve interoperability among office suites and long-term archival.

The project is described as having been initiated by a broad coalition of developers, librarians, and open standards advocates in the late 2010s. It sought to address perceived limitations in existing document formats, including licensing clarity, extensibility, and accessibility, by providing a common specification for document packaging, content representation, and metadata.

Technically, OpenDocumentin proposes a packaging model based on a zipped container and XML-based content schemas for the primary document types. It includes an extensible metadata framework for provenance, licensing, and versioning, and emphasizes accessibility and internationalization. A migration path is defined to enable interoperability with existing ODF documents, aiding both conversion and archival workflows.

Adoption and status as of now show limited uptake. No major office suites have adopted OpenDocumentin as a formal standard, though there are experimental forks and prototype implementations in some open-source projects. The initiative remains a topic of community discussion and is cited in conversations about improving openness and interoperability in office documents.
