Omx

OMX is an acronym used for different organizations and technologies. Notably, it refers to the OpenMAX multimedia API framework developed by the Khronos Group, and to OMX AB, a Nordic stock exchange operator now part of Nasdaq. The two uses are unrelated and arose in different industries.

OpenMAX (OMX) is a cross-platform set of standardized APIs designed to promote interoperability among multimedia components. Developed by the Khronos Group, it defines interfaces that connect media codecs and processing elements across devices. The most widely cited components are OpenMAX IL (Integration Layer), which provides a core API for components and their ports and buffers; OpenMAX AL (Application Layer), which targets platform services and resource management; and OpenMAX DL (Digital Signal Processing Layer), which offers common DSP routines. Implementations appear in many mobile devices, embedded systems, and consumer electronics to enable portable media processing.

OMX AB was a Swedish company established to operate the OMX Nordic Exchange, a group of Nordic and Baltic stock exchanges. It played a central role in consolidating trading venues in the region. In 2008, Nasdaq, Inc. acquired OMX AB, and the exchange group was rebranded as Nasdaq OMX Group. In subsequent years, the corporate branding was simplified to Nasdaq, and the OMX name became largely historical, though it remains part of the legacy of the Nordic market structure.
