Oksiditioarvo, also known as oxidation state or oxidation number, is a measure of the degree of oxidation of an atom in a chemical compound. It indicates the number of electrons that an atom has gained or lost in the process of forming chemical bonds. The concept of oxidation state is crucial in understanding and predicting the behavior of chemical reactions, particularly redox reactions, where electrons are transferred between atoms.

The oxidation state of an element is typically represented by a positive or negative integer. Positive oxidation states indicate that the atom has lost electrons, while negative oxidation states indicate that the atom has gained electrons. The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral compound is zero, and in an ion, it equals the charge of the ion.

The oxidation state of an element can vary depending on the compound it is in. For example, oxygen typically has an oxidation state of -2 in most compounds, but it can have a positive oxidation state in compounds like peroxides and superoxides. Similarly, carbon can have multiple oxidation states, ranging from -4 in methane to +4 in carbon dioxide.

The concept of oxidation state was introduced by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius in the early 19th century. It has since become a fundamental tool in chemistry for understanding and predicting the behavior of chemical reactions.
