Oksüdatsioonikihtidelt refers to the layers formed on a material's surface through oxidation. This process involves the reaction of a substance with oxygen, typically leading to the formation of metal oxides, but it can also occur with other elements. The resulting layer, often called a passive layer or oxide film, can significantly alter the material's properties.

In metallurgy, the formation of oxidation layers is a common phenomenon, especially at elevated temperatures or in corrosive environments. For instance, iron readily forms rust, which is a complex mixture of iron oxides and hydroxides. While sometimes undesirable, these layers can also be beneficial. For example, the thin, stable chromium oxide layer on stainless steel prevents further corrosion, a process known as passivation. Similarly, aluminum forms a protective aluminum oxide layer that shields the underlying metal from attack.

The thickness, composition, and structure of oxidation layers vary greatly depending on the material, the oxidizing conditions (temperature, oxygen partial pressure, presence of other reactive gases), and the duration of exposure. Understanding and controlling these layers is crucial in many industrial applications, from preventing corrosion in bridges and pipelines to designing heat-resistant alloys for engines and turbines. Techniques like anodizing are specifically employed to create controlled oxidation layers for enhanced protection and aesthetic purposes.
