Oksüdatsiooniastmed, also known as oxidation states or oxidation numbers, are a bookkeeping concept used in chemistry to track the hypothetical charge an atom would have if all its bonds to atoms of different elements were 100% ionic. It is a fundamental tool for understanding redox reactions. These numbers represent the degree of oxidation of an atom in a chemical compound.

The rules for assigning oxidation states are standardized. For a free element, the oxidation state is always zero. In simple ionic compounds, the oxidation state is equal to the charge of the ion. For example, in NaCl, sodium (Na) has an oxidation state of +1 and chlorine (Cl) has an oxidation state of -1. For molecular compounds, oxidation states are assigned based on electronegativity. More electronegative atoms are assigned more negative oxidation states, while less electronegative atoms receive more positive states. Oxygen typically has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides where it is -1 and when bonded to fluorine. Hydrogen usually has an oxidation state of +1 when bonded to nonmetals and -1 when bonded to metals. The sum of the oxidation states in a neutral compound is always zero, and in a polyatomic ion, it equals the charge of the ion.

Understanding oxidation states is crucial for balancing redox equations and predicting the products of chemical reactions. It helps identify which species are oxidized (lose electrons and increase in oxidation state) and which are reduced (gain electrons and decrease in oxidation state).
