Offaly

Offaly is a county in the midlands of Ireland, located in the province of Leinster. It is bordered by Westmeath to the east, Laois to the southeast, and by the River Shannon to the west, which forms part of the county’s boundary. The landscape features the central limestone plain, the Bog of Allen, and the southern Slieve Bloom Mountains, with the Shannon providing a historic and cultural axis.

The county has a long monastic and medieval history, with Clonmacnoise on the Shannon among its best-known sites. Offaly was established as King's County in 1556 during the Tudor era and was renamed Offaly in 1922 after independence. The county town is Tullamore; other significant towns include Birr and Edenderry.

Offaly’s economy historically centered on agriculture and peat production, the latter linked to Bord na Móna’s peatlands and energy projects. In recent decades the economy has diversified toward services, manufacturing, and tourism. Notable attractions include Clonmacnoise, the Birr Castle Demesne with its historic scientific instruments, the Boora Parklands and the Bog of Allen cycle route, and the Tullamore D.E.W. whiskey distillery, which contribute to local heritage and visitors.

Local government is provided by Offaly County Council. The county remains known for its rural character, archaeological and industrial history, and the scenic landscapes of the midland region, making it a destination for heritage tourism and outdoor recreation.
