Obligationsfinansiering

Obligationsfinansiering, also known as debt financing, refers to the process by which companies raise capital by borrowing money. This borrowed money is typically repaid with interest over a predetermined period. Unlike equity financing, where investors receive ownership stakes in the company, debt financing creates a creditor-debtor relationship.

The most common form of obligationsfinansiering is through issuing bonds. Bonds are essentially IOUs that a company sells to investors. The company promises to pay back the principal amount of the bond on a specific maturity date, along with regular interest payments (coupons) along the way. Other forms of debt financing can include bank loans, lines of credit, and commercial paper.

Companies opt for obligationsfinansiering for several reasons. It can be a less dilutive form of financing compared to issuing stock, as it doesn't require giving up ownership. Debt interest payments are often tax-deductible, which can reduce a company's overall tax burden. However, debt financing also comes with obligations. Companies must be able to make regular interest payments and repay the principal on time, regardless of their financial performance. Failure to do so can lead to default, bankruptcy, and damage to the company's credit rating. The level of debt a company takes on is a crucial consideration in its financial strategy.
