Oberflächenvorgängen

Oberflächenvorgänge, also known as surface phenomena, refer to physical or chemical processes that occur at the interface between two phases. These interfaces can be between a solid and a gas, a solid and a liquid, a liquid and a gas, or two immiscible liquids. The unique properties of matter at surfaces are often quite different from those in the bulk of the material due to the imbalance of intermolecular forces. Atoms or molecules at the surface experience fewer neighboring interactions compared to those in the interior, leading to higher surface energy.

Key Oberflächenvorgänge include adsorption, where atoms, ions, or molecules from a substance adhere to a surface. This can be physisorption, involving weak van der Waals forces, or chemisorption, which involves the formation of chemical bonds. Another important phenomenon is catalysis, where a substance (the catalyst) increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed itself, often by providing an alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy at its surface. Wetting and spreading are also surface phenomena, describing the ability of a liquid to maintain contact with a solid surface, resulting from adhesive and cohesive forces. Surface tension, a property of liquids, arises from the cohesive forces between liquid molecules and is responsible for phenomena like droplet formation and capillary action. Understanding Oberflächenvorgänge is crucial in various fields, including materials science, chemistry, biology, and engineering, impacting processes like corrosion, lubrication, and drug delivery.
