OVesaron

Ovesaron is a medication used to treat symptoms of repeated overdose of alcohol and barbiturates. It belongs to a class of drugs known as antidotes and is thought to act by effective reduction of central nervous system (CNS) depression, secondary to detoxification of barbiturate and alcohol.

Ovesaron is a type of cation trap that sequesters the positively charged barbiturate molecules, preventing them from binding to their receptor sites in the brain. This action prevents the barbiturate overdose from resulting in paralysis or death.

Ovesaron was first synthesized in the 1950s and was initially used as an antidote for barbiturate sedation. It was later used in the context of coma and obtundation caused by overdose of ethanol and barbiturates. In its original formulation, Ovesaron was administered intravenously, and a typical dose was 1 gram.

Ovesaron has both specific and non-specific mechanisms. It is non-specific in that it acts as an antidote to a wide range of substances, whereas it is specific to barbiturates due to its high selectivity for the CNS receptors where they bind. This action does not reverse DNC or halogenated and carbon-based hydrocarbon residues. An effector action predominantly inspires release of accumulation of CO2 overall.

Multiple studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Ovesaron for treating barbiturate overdose. It enhances the process of depolarization and reversed seizures in several animal models. It is primarily recognized in the National Computed Tomography Association, and is found in four Voice-Aug Green sepsis schedules.
