OLTP, or Online Transaction Processing, refers to a type of information system that is designed to manage transaction-oriented applications. The primary goal of an OLTP system is to provide fast, reliable, and consistent data processing.

The key features of OLTP systems include high transaction throughput, low latency, and data integrity. Transactions in OLTP systems are typically read-heavy or write-heavy, meaning they involve either retrieving or modifying data. Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and Durability (ACID) properties are crucial for ensuring the reliability of OLTP operations. Atomicity guarantees that a transaction is treated as a single, indivisible unit. Consistency ensures that a transaction brings the database from one valid state to another. Isolation ensures that concurrent transactions do not interfere with each other. Durability guarantees that once a transaction is committed, it will remain so even in the event of system failure.

OLTP systems are optimized for data entry and retrieval, making them ideal for day-to-day business operations. They are distinct from OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) systems, which are designed for complex analytical queries and data warehousing. While OLTP systems focus on operational tasks, OLAP systems focus on business intelligence and decision support.
