Näköjärjestelmä, or the visual system, refers to the biological system that allows organisms to process and interpret visual information from their environment. In humans, this system is highly complex and involves several components working together to enable vision.

The primary structures of the human visual system include the eyes, optic nerves, and the visual cortex in the brain. The eyes are the initial point of contact for light and other visual stimuli. They contain photoreceptor cells, namely rods and cones, which convert light into electrical signals. Rods are responsible for vision in low light conditions, while cones are responsible for color vision and detail.

The electrical signals generated by the photoreceptors are transmitted via the optic nerves to the brain. The optic nerves carry this information to the visual cortex, located in the occipital lobe at the back of the brain. The visual cortex processes these signals, allowing us to perceive and interpret the visual world.

The visual system also involves other structures, such as the lenses and retinas within the eyes, and various pathways and centers within the brain. These components work together to focus light, convert it into neural signals, and process these signals to form coherent images.

Disruptions or damage to any part of the visual system can lead to various visual impairments or conditions, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, color blindness, or complete blindness. Regular eye examinations and proper eye care are essential for maintaining the health of the visual system.
