Nyelvészettudományi is a Hungarian term that translates to linguistics in English. Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It encompasses a wide range of subfields that investigate language from various perspectives, including its structure, history, and use. Linguists aim to understand the fundamental nature of language, how it is acquired, how it changes over time, and how it functions in human society.

The study of linguistics can be broadly divided into several core areas. Phonetics and phonology deal with the sounds of language, examining how they are produced, perceived, and organized into systems. Morphology studies the internal structure of words and how they are formed. Syntax focuses on the rules governing the combination of words into phrases and sentences. Semantics explores the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. Pragmatics investigates how context influences meaning and how language is used in communication.

Beyond these core areas, linguistics also includes fields such as historical linguistics, which traces language change over time and reconstructs ancestral languages; sociolinguistics, which examines the relationship between language and society; psycholinguistics, which studies the cognitive processes involved in language use; and neurolinguistics, which investigates the neural mechanisms underlying language. Applied linguistics utilizes linguistic theories and methods to address real-world problems, such as language teaching, translation, and speech therapy.
