In plants, nutrient transport primarily occurs through specialized tissues such as xylem and phloem. The xylem transports water and dissolved minerals, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, from the roots to other parts of the plant. This upward movement is driven by transpiration, where water evaporates from leaves, creating a negative pressure that pulls water upward. The phloem, on the other hand, distributes sugars and other organic compounds produced during photosynthesis from leaves to areas of growth, storage, or metabolic activity. This process relies on pressure flow, where sugars are actively loaded into phloem cells in source tissues, increasing osmotic pressure and driving the flow toward sink tissues.

In animals, nutrient transport is facilitated by the circulatory system, which delivers oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other vital substances via the bloodstream. The heart pumps blood through arteries to capillaries, where exchange occurs between blood and tissues. Nutrients like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids are absorbed from the digestive tract and transported by the blood to cells. The lymphatic system also plays a role by returning excess fluid and absorbing dietary fats. Cells then uptake nutrients through active or passive transport mechanisms, depending on the substance and energy requirements.

Efficient nutrient transport is critical for preventing deficiencies or excesses, which can disrupt cellular functions. Disruptions in these processes, such as vascular blockages in animals or root damage in plants, can lead to malnutrition, stunted growth, or disease. Understanding nutrient transport helps in agricultural practices, medical treatments, and maintaining overall biological health.
