Nukleointivaihe refers to the initial stage of crystal formation, a crucial process in various fields such as materials science, chemistry, and geology. During this phase, a small, stable cluster of atoms or molecules, known as a nucleus, forms spontaneously within a supersaturated or supercooled parent phase. This nucleus serves as the foundation upon which further crystal growth can occur. The formation of these nuclei is often a random process, driven by thermodynamic fluctuations.

The stability of a nucleus is determined by a balance between the energy gained from forming a solid phase and the energy required to create a new surface interface between the nucleus and the surrounding parent phase. For a nucleus to be stable and grow, its size must exceed a critical radius. Below this critical size, smaller clusters tend to dissolve back into the parent phase due to the unfavorable surface energy. Above this size, the nucleus becomes thermodynamically favored to grow, leading to the development of a macroscopic crystal.

Nukleointivaihe can be broadly classified into two types: homogeneous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous nucleation occurs spontaneously within a pure, uniform parent phase without the presence of any foreign surfaces or impurities. Heterogeneous nucleation, on the other hand, is facilitated by the presence of surfaces, such as container walls, dust particles, or other solid impurities, which reduce the energy barrier for nucleus formation. This latter type is generally more common in practical situations.
