Nukleatsioonivõimalus refers to the probability of a new phase forming within a metastable phase. This process is crucial in various physical phenomena, including crystallization, boiling, and condensation. For a new phase to nucleate, a small cluster of the new phase must form within the parent phase. This initial cluster, known as a nucleus, must overcome an energy barrier to grow.

The energy barrier arises from the balance between the surface energy and the volume free energy. The surface energy is unfavorable, as it requires creating a new interface between the two phases. However, the volume free energy is favorable if the new phase is thermodynamically more stable than the parent phase. The critical size of a nucleus is the size at which the net free energy change is zero. Nuclei smaller than this critical size tend to redissolve, while those larger than this critical size tend to grow.

The probability of nucleation is strongly dependent on factors such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of impurities or defects. Homogeneous nucleation occurs spontaneously within a pure, uniform phase, while heterogeneous nucleation occurs on surfaces or interfaces, such as the walls of a container or dust particles. Heterogeneous nucleation typically has a lower energy barrier and is therefore more probable than homogeneous nucleation.
