Nuklearmedicinska, often translated as nuclear medicine, is a medical specialty that uses small amounts of radioactive materials, called radiopharmaceuticals, to diagnose and treat disease. These radiopharmaceuticals are administered to the patient, usually by injection, swallowing, or inhalation. The radioactive material then travels through the body and collects in specific organs or tissues.

Detectors, such as gamma cameras, can then measure the radiation emitted from the body. This information is used to create images that show how organs and tissues are functioning. This functional information is often unique to nuclear medicine and can reveal disease processes at an early stage, sometimes before structural changes are visible on other imaging techniques like X-rays or CT scans.

Common diagnostic procedures in nuclear medicine include bone scans to detect fractures or cancer spread, thyroid scans to assess thyroid function, and PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography) which can visualize metabolic activity in organs like the brain and heart, or detect cancer.

In addition to diagnosis, nuclear medicine is also used therapeutically. Certain radiopharmaceuticals can be targeted to destroy cancerous cells or to alleviate symptoms of conditions like hyperthyroidism and bone pain from cancer. The radiation dose from these diagnostic and therapeutic procedures is carefully controlled and monitored to ensure patient safety. Nuclear medicine imaging provides a unique window into the body's internal workings at a cellular and molecular level.
