Nowogródzki

Nowogródzki is a historical region and former administrative unit located in present-day Belarus. Its historical center was the city of Nowogródek, now Novohradak in Belarusian. The region played a significant role in the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was formed in the 13th century, and Novohradak quickly became one of its important centers, often serving as a temporary capital. The region was known for its strategic importance and its diverse population, which included Belarusians, Poles, Jews, and Tatars. During the medieval period, Nowogródzki was a territory of significant military and political influence.

Following the Union of Lublin in 1569, which created the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Nowogródzki remained an administrative division within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was a large voivodeship, encompassing a considerable territory. Throughout the centuries, the region experienced various conflicts and political changes, including periods of Russian and Swedish rule.

After the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the late 18th century, the lands of Nowogródzki were absorbed into the Russian Empire. The administrative structures of the voivodeship were dissolved, and its territory was reorganized into uyezds within larger Russian guberniyas. The historical identity of Nowogródzki, however, continued to be recognized through its cultural and historical significance. Today, the legacy of Nowogródzki is preserved in the historical memory and cultural heritage of the region.
