Norðurlandamál refers to the North Germanic languages, also known as the Scandinavian languages. This language family is part of the larger Indo-European language family and originated in Scandinavia. The primary languages within this group are Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. These three languages are mutually intelligible to a significant degree, particularly in their written forms. Icelandic and Faroese, while also North Germanic languages, have diverged more significantly and are not as easily understood by speakers of Danish, Swedish, or Norwegian.
