Normalvattenlösningar, often referred to as normal solutions, are a specific type of chemical solution used in analytical chemistry. The term "normal" relates to the concept of normality, which is a measure of concentration. A normal solution contains one equivalent of a solute per liter of solution. An equivalent is a quantity that represents the reactive capacity of a substance in a particular chemical reaction. This concept is particularly useful in acid-base titrations and redox reactions, where the number of moles of reacting species can vary depending on the stoichiometry of the reaction.

The normality of a solution is often denoted by the symbol N. For example, a 1 N hydrochloric acid solution contains one equivalent of HCl per liter. The equivalent weight of a substance depends on the specific reaction it is involved in. For acids, the equivalent weight is typically the molecular weight divided by the number of acidic protons it can donate. For bases, it is the molecular weight divided by the number of hydroxide ions it can accept or protons it can accept. In redox reactions, the equivalent weight is the molecular weight divided by the number of electrons transferred per molecule.

The advantage of using normal solutions is that the number of equivalents of acid will always equal the number of equivalents of base in a neutralization reaction, regardless of the specific acids and bases used. This simplifies calculations in titrations. However, the concept of equivalents can sometimes be confusing because it is reaction-dependent. Molarity, which is the number of moles of solute per liter of solution, is a more universally used and unambiguous measure of concentration in modern chemistry. Despite this, normality remains a practical unit in certain applications.
