Nominalmåttet

Nominalmåttet, often translated as nominal scale or nominal measurement, is the simplest type of measurement scale in statistics. It is used to categorize data into distinct groups or labels where there is no inherent order or ranking among the categories. The categories are mutually exclusive and exhaustive, meaning each observation belongs to exactly one category, and all possible categories are represented. Examples of nominal data include gender (male, female, non-binary), eye color (blue, brown, green), or types of pets (dog, cat, fish). Mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division are not meaningful for nominal data. However, frequencies and proportions can be calculated for each category, and statistical tests like the chi-squared test are suitable for analyzing nominal data. The primary purpose of nominal measurement is to classify and identify groups without implying any quantitative value or order.
