Nitrosopumilales

Nitrosopumilales is an order of Archaea belonging to the phylum Crenarchaeota. Organisms within this order are known as ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA). They play a significant role in the global nitrogen cycle by oxidizing ammonia to nitrite, a crucial step in nitrification. This process contributes to the availability of nitrogen for primary producers in various ecosystems, including soil, marine environments, and freshwater.

The discovery of Nitrosopumilales, particularly the genus Nitrosopumilus, revolutionized the understanding of ammonia oxidation.
