Nitrogénoxidanyagok, commonly referred to as nitrogen oxides (NOx), are a group of gases containing nitrogen and oxygen. The most prevalent forms are nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Nitric oxide is a colorless gas, while nitrogen dioxide is a reddish-brown gas with a pungent odor. These compounds are formed naturally through processes like lightning strikes and biological activity. However, a significant source of NOx is human activity, primarily the combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles, power plants, and industrial facilities. High temperatures during combustion cause nitrogen and oxygen in the air to react, forming these oxides.

NOx plays a dual role in the environment. In the atmosphere, it contributes to the formation of smog, a visible air pollutant that can cause respiratory problems. It also participates in the formation of acid rain when it reacts with water, oxygen, and other chemicals. Furthermore, NOx is a precursor to particulate matter, tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in the air that can be inhaled and cause health issues. On the other hand, nitric oxide is a vital signaling molecule in the human body, involved in regulating blood pressure, immune responses, and neurotransmission.
