Nightcaps
A nightcap is a type of soft, close-fitting hat that was traditionally worn to bed. Primarily, nightcaps served to keep the head warm during the night, particularly in colder climates or less heated homes. They also helped to absorb any perspiration from the scalp and could prevent hair from becoming disheveled. The style of nightcap varied, often reflecting the wearer's social standing. Wealthier individuals might have nightcaps made of finer materials like silk or satin, sometimes adorned with ribbons or lace. Simpler cotton or wool versions were common for the general population.
The popularity of nightcaps peaked in the 17th and 18th centuries. As central heating became more widespread
