Ngultrum

Ngultrum is the official currency of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Its ISO code is BTN and its common symbol is Nu; the currency is subdivided into 100 chetrum. The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA) issues and regulates the Ngultrum.

The Ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee at parity, and the rupee is widely accepted in Bhutan. This fixed exchange rate arrangement links Bhutan’s monetary policy to India’s and helps facilitate cross-border trade and travel. The peg is maintained by the RMA through monetary policy tools and foreign reserves.

Banknotes and coins are issued in a range of denominations and are used throughout Bhutan. In practice, Indian rupees are commonly accepted in marketplaces, at border posts, and in many tourist areas, though change is typically given in Ngultrum.

Historically, Bhutan developed its own currency as part of modernization efforts, while the rupee remains an important parallel tender due to the currency peg. The Royal Monetary Authority oversees currency issuance, banking regulation, and financial stability in Bhutan.
